Destination guide

# Fayoum & Wadi El-Hitan

Realistic minimum

1 day

Seasons

October to April. Winter also brings migrating birds to the lakes. In the hot months Wadi El-Hitan is bearable at first light and not much later.

Role in a trip

A day or a weekend out of Cairo, often at the start or end of a trip.

Fayoum & Wadi El-Hitan

## Lakes, a potters’ village and a World Heritage valley of whale fossils, close enough to Cairo for a long day. One day means choosing between them.

Fayoum is a farmed basin south-west of Cairo, watered by a canal from the Nile, with Lake Qarun along its northern edge, the pottery village of Tunis on the lake shore, and the protected deserts of Wadi El-Rayan and Wadi El-Hitan beyond. It is close enough for a long day trip, but the fossil valley is a further drive into the desert, so a single day means choosing.

## At a glance

Getting there

By road from Cairo; there is no airport and no rail link that helps a visitor. The last stretch to Wadi El-Hitan has long been a desert track, so ask about its current condition and the vehicle being used.

Walking and heat

Moderate to high at Wadi El-Hitan, where a marked trail crosses open desert with no shade. Low around Tunis and the lakes.

Who it suits

Curious children and adults who like fossils and landscape, people who want a break from monuments, and anyone interested in craft.

## Why go

Wadi El-Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, is a World Heritage site where the skeletons of early whales lie on the desert surface where they were found. These animals still had small hind limbs. UNESCO calls it the most important site in the world for showing that stage of evolution, the move of whales from land to sea. A walking trail links the skeletons, and a small museum at the entrance explains them.

The rest of Fayoum is gentler. Tunis is a village of potters, a tradition that grew out of a school set up by the Swiss potter Evelyne Porret, with studios you can visit and buy from directly. Wadi El-Rayan has two lakes joined by low waterfalls and, further in, the dune-ringed Magic Lake. Lake Qarun is broad, brackish and good for birds.

## Where to focus

### Wadi El-Hitan

Allow two hours or so on the trail, more if you read every panel. There is no shade between the shelters. The drive in is part of the day, through wind-carved rock, and it is long enough that an early start from Cairo is not optional.

### Tunis village

A lane of pottery studios, a few guesthouses and cafés, and views over the lake. It fills with Cairo weekenders on Fridays and Saturdays and is much quieter midweek. Some studios run short workshops if asked in advance.

### Wadi El-Rayan and the Magic Lake

The waterfalls are modest and popular; the Magic Lake, reached over sand, is the more striking stop, especially near sunset. Dune driving here should be with a local driver in a suitable vehicle.

### Lake Qarun, Karanis and Qasr Qarun

For anyone who cannot leave antiquity alone: the ruined Greco-Roman town of Karanis on the road in from Cairo, and the Ptolemaic temple of Qasr Qarun at the lake’s western end. Neither is essential, and both are usually empty.

## Practical reality

- Wadi El-Rayan and Wadi El-Hitan are protected areas with a ticket gate. Carry cash for entry and for anything you buy in Tunis.

- Take more water than seems necessary, a hat and closed shoes. There is next to nothing for sale beyond the entrance to Wadi El-Hitan.

- With children, heat and the length of the drive decide the day, not the distance walked. In the cooler months the fossil trail is a good one for them.

- Village lanes and desert paths are sandy and uneven. A lake-and-studios day involves far less walking than the fossil valley.

## How long to stay

In one day from Cairo, choose: Wadi El-Hitan with a stop at the Magic Lake, or Tunis and the lakes at an easy pace. We suggest a night in Tunis if you want both, which also gets you to the fossil valley before the heat and before anyone else.
