# Luxor & Aswan

Realistic minimum

4 nights

Seasons

October to April. Winter days are warm and nights cool. From May to September the West Bank and Abu Simbel need very early starts and short spells outdoors.

Role in a trip

The ancient-sites heart of a first trip, usually after Cairo and before the coast.

Luxor & Aswan

## Temples, royal tombs and Nile travel from two very different Upper Egypt bases. How you move between Luxor and Aswan, by road, rail or boat, shapes the week.

Upper Egypt, for visitors, means two bases roughly 200 km apart on the Nile: Luxor, with Karnak, Luxor Temple and the West Bank tombs, and Aswan, with Philae, the river islands and the route south to Abu Simbel. They feel nothing alike and each deserves its own nights, whether you link them by road, by rail or on a boat.

## At a glance

Getting there

Luxor (LXR) and Aswan (ASW) both have airports with flights from Cairo, and Abu Simbel has an airstrip of its own. Trains run the length of the valley from Cairo; check the current timetable for your dates.

Walking and heat

High outdoors. Stairs and ramps down into tombs, sand and uneven paving at the temples, strong sun on the West Bank, and steps on and off boats at Philae and along the river.

Who it suits

Anyone who came to Egypt for ancient sites, and travellers who want time on the river. Aswan is the gentler of the two towns.

## Why go

Luxor stands on ancient Thebes. On the east bank, Karnak grew over many centuries into a walled city of temples, and Luxor Temple sits right in the modern town, lit at night. Across the river, the West Bank holds the Valley of the Kings, the tombs of queens, nobles and workmen, Hatshepsut’s terraced temple and Medinet Habu. You will not see all of it, and you should not try.

Aswan is where the valley narrows to granite and the pace drops. The draw here is the river: Philae on its island, Elephantine and the botanical island midstream, Nubian villages on the west bank, a felucca at the end of the day. It is also the jumping-off point for Abu Simbel.

## Where to focus

### Luxor east bank: Karnak and Luxor Temple

Karnak needs two or three hours and a guide who can choose a route, because its scale defeats wandering. Luxor Temple is smaller and easy to read, and an evening visit there is one of the pleasant ways to end a hot day. The Luxor Museum, between the two, is compact and well lit.

### Luxor West Bank

The Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s temple at Deir el-Bahari, Medinet Habu, the Tombs of the Nobles and the workmen’s village at Deir el-Medina. Choose three or four for one morning. The smaller tombs of nobles and workmen are often where people linger, because the painting is close, domestic and rarely crowded.

### Aswan: Philae, the islands and the Nubian villages

The temple of Isis at Philae was dismantled and rebuilt on higher Agilkia Island in the 1970s, during the UNESCO campaign to save the Nubian monuments from the rising reservoir, and you still arrive by boat. Leave an afternoon with nothing in it but the river.

### Abu Simbel

The two rock-cut temples of Ramesses II stand far to the south, near the Sudanese border, also moved to higher ground in the same campaign. It is a flight from Aswan or a long road trip that starts before dawn. Whether that is worth a day of your trip depends on how much time you have; we have set out the argument in a separate guide.

### Between the two: Edfu, Kom Ombo and Esna

Edfu is a Ptolemaic temple preserved nearly to its roof. Kom Ombo is a double temple on a bend of the river, and Esna has a recently cleaned painted ceiling. Cruise itineraries include the first two; by road you can stop at whichever you like.

## Practical reality

- Do not swim or wade in the Nile, however clear it looks. The US CDC advises travellers in Egypt to avoid contact with fresh water, including the Nile and irrigation canals, because of schistosomiasis. Hotel pools are the place to swim.

- In the Valley of the Kings, not every tomb is open at once and some need their own ticket. Decide what you want to see before you reach the ticket window, or let your guide do it.

- Hot-air balloons fly over the West Bank at dawn when the weather allows and are cancelled in wind. If a flight matters to you, keep a spare morning.

- Tombs mean stairs, ramps and low passages; temples mean sand and uneven stone. River boats differ widely in cabin access, stairs and gangways, so if steps are a problem, ask for specifics, not a general assurance.

- Small notes are handy on the river and at the sites. The wider picture on cash, cards and tipping is in our money guide.

## How to plan the area

Decide first how you will travel between the two. By road or rail it is a half-day, with the option of stopping at the temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo on the way. A Nile boat turns the same stretch into a journey of several nights with those temples built in; standard cruises usually run three or four nights, and smaller dahabiyas take longer. A boat is a fixed timetable, so if there is a tomb or temple you care about, check how long the schedule actually gives you there.

In Luxor, split your days by bank. The West Bank is the hot, exposed, early-morning half; the east-bank temples work well in late afternoon and after dark. In Aswan, plan around boats: Philae is reached by motorboat, the islands by felucca or ferry.

## How long to stay

We suggest four nights as a floor: two in each town, or a three- or four-night boat with a night ashore at one end. Add a night in Aswan if you are going to Abu Simbel, so that the early start does not land on a travel day.

We think Luxor rewards the slower pace most. A third night there turns the West Bank from a single crowded morning into two calm ones.

## Good combinations

Where the trip usually begins; fly or take the train south.

- [The mainland Red Sea coast](https://egyptmore.com/destinations/red-sea)

Hurghada and Safaga are a road transfer from Luxor, which is why a coast stay so often follows the Nile.

The honest trade-off for a seven-, ten- and fourteen-day trip.

Upper Egypt is the hottest part of a usual route, so the month matters here.
