Destination guide

# The Red Sea

Realistic minimum

3 nights

Seasons

Year-round, with trade-offs. Spring and autumn balance air and water temperature. Winter is mild, but windy days feel cool out of the water and not every pool is heated. Summer is hot on land and warm in the sea.

Role in a trip

The rest at the end of a Nile trip, or a holiday in its own right.

The Red Sea

## The mainland coast from El Gouna to Marsa Alam. Choose by reef access, beach type, town or resort, and airport.

This page covers Egypt’s mainland Red Sea coast, from El Gouna and Hurghada south through Safaga to Marsa Alam. Sharm el-Sheikh and Dahab are across the water in South Sinai and have their own page; the two coasts are not a day trip apart.

## At a glance

Getting there

Hurghada (HRG) serves Hurghada, El Gouna, Soma Bay and Safaga. Marsa Alam (RMF) serves the south, where a resort can still be a long drive from the terminal.

Walking and heat

Low on land. In the water it depends on the entry: a jetty over the reef means ladders and open water, a sandy bay does not.

Who it suits

Snorkellers, divers, kitesurfers, families who want a beach-and-pool base, and couples closing a busy itinerary.

## Where to focus

### El Gouna

A planned resort town north of Hurghada, built around lagoons and marinas. You can walk or take a boat between hotels, restaurants and the marina, which is rare on this coast. Shallow lagoons and steady wind make it a kitesurfing base. The trade-off is that swimming is mostly lagoon and managed beach; the reef is a boat ride away.

### Hurghada

A long, busy resort city with a broad range of hotels and prices, and day boats to offshore reefs and islands. Quality and atmosphere vary a good deal from one stretch to the next, so compare properties, not the town. It is the practical choice after Luxor and for mixed groups who want different things.

### Soma Bay and Safaga

South of Hurghada the coast thins out. Soma Bay is a self-contained resort peninsula with a handful of large hotels; Safaga is a working port town known among divers and windsurfers. Choose this stretch for quieter water and fewer neighbours, accepting that evenings happen inside the resort.

### Marsa Alam and the far south

A long, thinly built coast where hotels sit far apart, many with a reef directly offshore. Bays such as Abu Dabbab are known for turtles and seagrass meadows, though no operator can promise a sighting. Port Ghalib, near the airport, is the one marina town. Come for the water and for quiet, and check the transfer time from the airport to your particular hotel.

## Practical reality

- Ask how you get into the sea at your hotel: sand, lagoon or jetty. Jetties can close in strong wind, and they do not suit weak swimmers or small children.

- Choose the boat or dive operator as carefully as the hotel. After a run of accidents, the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch advised booking liveaboards through vendors who can show what safety standards the boat meets, and asking for a full safety briefing on board. A low price or a hotel desk booking proves nothing either way.

- A certified dive and an introductory dive are different activities. Tell the centre your real experience and when you last dived, and ask what medical form they use.

- If steps are a problem, ask for the route from the room to the pool, the beach and the water, including the ladder or ramp at the end of it. “Beachfront” tells you nothing about that.

- Reefs here start in very shallow water. Do not stand on coral, and wear a rash vest, not just sunscreen.

- Do not use a Hurghada transfer time to estimate anything in Sinai; they are different coasts with a gulf between them.

- Swimwear belongs on the beach and by the pool. In town, the national guidance in our etiquette guide applies.

## How to plan the area

Four things separate these places, and none of them is the star rating. Reef access: can you snorkel from the shore, or does every outing need a boat? Beach type: gradual sand, a lagoon, or a jetty across a reef flat. Atmosphere: a real town you can walk around in the evening, or a self-contained resort a long way from anything. And the airport, which decides how much of your first and last day goes on the road.

As a rule the coast gets quieter and the reef gets closer as you go south. Hurghada and El Gouna have the choice of hotels, restaurants and boat trips. Marsa Alam has the shore reefs and the silence, and little to do outside the hotel gate. Ask about the exact bay, in the month you are travelling; a destination name tells you very little.

## How long to stay

We suggest three nights as a floor, which leaves two clear days once the transfers are accounted for. Four or five is where a coast stay starts to feel like rest. A dive course needs days of its own; ask the centre how many before you fix the dates.

## Questions about The Red Sea

### Do I need a diving certificate to dive in the Red Sea?

Not for an introductory dive, which is a shallow, closely supervised session for beginners. Anything beyond that needs a recognised certification, and a centre should ask to see it along with your logbook. If you have not dived for a while, expect a check dive first, and be wary of a centre that does not suggest one.

### Can I combine Hurghada or Marsa Alam with Sharm el-Sheikh or Dahab?

You can, but it is two holidays, not one. The coasts face each other across the mouth of the Gulf of Suez, and the dependable ways between them are a flight through Cairo or a very long drive. A ferry between Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh has run in some years and not in others, so do not plan around it unless you have confirmed it for your dates.

## Good combinations

- [Luxor and Aswan](https://egyptmore.com/destinations/luxor-aswan)

The classic pairing: temples first, then a road transfer from Luxor to the coast.

- [South Sinai](https://egyptmore.com/destinations/south-sinai)

Sharm el-Sheikh, Dahab and the mountains: the other Red Sea coast, reached through Cairo or by its own flights.
