## Seven checks to make before you pay for anything

Each takes a few minutes, and each has caught out travellers who skipped it.

1. ### Entry rules for your passport and your route

Visa eligibility, fees and the South Sinai stamp depend on nationality and where you land. Advice written for another passport is not your answer.

    [Visa and entry](https://egyptmore.com/travel-guide/visa-entry)
2. ### Your government’s advice for every area on the route

Advisories treat regions of Egypt differently, and travelling against them can affect your insurance. Read the map as well as the headline.

    [Safety advice](https://egyptmore.com/travel-guide/safety-advice)
3. ### A travel-health appointment, and every medicine you carry

The CDC suggests seeing a doctor at least a month ahead. Some common medicines are controlled in Egypt and may need permission in advance.

    [Health basics](https://egyptmore.com/travel-guide/safety-advice)
4. ### Dates chosen for the hottest place you will visit

Luxor and Aswan, not Cairo, decide how comfortable a classic route will be. Heat changes how much fits in a day.

    [Weather by region](https://egyptmore.com/travel-guide/weather-best-time)
5. ### How each long leg is travelled, and in daylight

Flights, trains and road transfers each cost a different share of the day. Official advice is firm about avoiding night driving outside cities.

    [Getting around](https://egyptmore.com/travel-guide/getting-around)
6. ### Cash for the first hours, and the right currency for the visa

Cards cover hotels; taxis and tips need pounds. A visa on arrival is paid in US dollars before you reach an airport ATM.

    [Money and payments](https://egyptmore.com/travel-guide/money-payments)
7. ### Opening hours and access for each site, close to the day

Hours, ticket rules, Ramadan timings, photography tickets, lifts and ramps differ by venue and change. Check the official listing shortly before you go, and get step-free access confirmed in writing if you need it.

The honest version

## What polished brochures often leave out

Egypt can be extraordinary and still require preparation. These are not reasons to avoid it; they are reasons to design the trip intelligently.

- ### Traffic changes what fits in a day

A short distance in Cairo can consume a meaningful part of the day. Back-to-back timed entries create stress and can turn a private trip into a race.

**What to do:** Plan by neighbourhood, protect airport and dining buffers, and keep one flexible slot each day.

    Sources: [Experience Egypt](https://www.experienceegypt.eg/en/usefulinfo)

- ### Heat and shade affect the quality of a site visit

Outdoor monuments can involve long walks on exposed, uneven ground. The hottest months demand earlier starts, slower pacing, hydration, and fewer midday ambitions.

**What to do:** Ask for the actual walking distance, shade, vehicle access, and a heat-adjusted plan.

- ### Touts and persistent selling are real

Some visitors experience pressure around major sites. A service presented as a gift or “included” may become a payment discussion later.

**What to do:** Agree the service and price first, use a clear refusal, and ask your guide to handle unwanted approaches.

Sources: [UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office](https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/egypt)

- ### Photography is permitted in many places, but not without limits

Personal photography in public places is broadly allowed, yet people, children, sensitive infrastructure, professional equipment, individual venues, and drones are subject to specific restrictions.

**What to do:** Ask before photographing people, obey venue signs, and do not bring a drone without prior official authorisation.

- ### Women may encounter harassment or unwanted attention

Many women have rewarding trips, but minimising the issue is not ethical. Risks can rise when alone at night, in taxis, or with unvetted providers.

**What to do:** Use vetted transport, share live journey details, control room access, and report incidents rather than accepting pressure to stay quiet.

Sources: [UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office](https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/egypt)

- ### LGBTQ+ travellers need candid legal and social context

Same-sex activity is not explicitly criminalised, but authorities have used other laws against LGBTQ+ people and public acceptance is limited. Public affection and sensitive online conversations can attract risk.

**What to do:** Read current government advice privately and make an informed personal decision about visibility and digital safety.

Sources: [UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office](https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/egypt)

- ### Transport standards vary

A luxury-looking vehicle or boat is not proof of maintenance, seatbelts, trained drivers, lifejackets, or safe operating practice. Road, rail, river, and sea incidents do occur.

**What to do:** Ask the operator specific safety questions and avoid overnight road travel merely to save a hotel night.

- ### Accessibility must be confirmed, not assumed

Some museums list ramps, lifts, paved routes, or adapted services; ancient sites may still have sand, steps, broken ground, narrow entrances, or limited vehicle access.

**What to do:** Request a site-by-site access plan that names surfaces, steps, distances, toilets, seating, and the backup if a lift is unavailable.

## Advice by traveller, not by stereotype

The right Egypt itinerary depends on energy, privacy, mobility, and tolerance for uncertainty, not just how many nights you have.

- ### Private and premium travellers

Pay for control where it changes the experience: expert guiding, timed logistics, comfortable transfers, and responsive support. Expensive extras without a clear benefit are not automatically luxury.

    Ask for

    - Named hotel room category
    - Private-versus-shared disclosure
    - Vehicle and guide standards
    - All exclusions in writing
- ### Families with children

Shorter site visits, swimming time, familiar meals, shade, and a flexible driver usually improve the trip more than adding another monument.

    Ask for

    - Age-appropriate guiding
    - Child restraints requested in advance
    - Pool and connecting-room confirmation
    - Low-pressure mornings
- ### Solo women

Independence and support can coexist. Arrange reliable arrivals and late-night transport, while keeping daytime plans flexible enough to explore confidently.

    Ask for

    - Vetted drivers
    - Live-location sharing
    - Hotel room privacy
    - Clear escalation contact
- ### Travellers with mobility or sensory needs

Ask for measurements and surfaces, not a simple “accessible” label. Build rest, toilet, shade, noise, and boarding requirements into the itinerary before deposits are paid.

    Ask for

    - Step and distance audit
    - Lift and ramp confirmation
    - Adapted-room photographs
    - Named backup plan
- ### Couples and honeymooners

Privacy, atmosphere, and breathing room matter more than nonstop sightseeing. Confirm what “romantic” inclusions actually mean and whether the setting is private.

    Ask for

    - Private dining terms
    - Cabin or room location
    - Celebration costs
    - Unscheduled time together

EgyptMore editorial guidance

## A realistic pace for a first trip

These are our planning recommendations, not official minimums. They assume private transport and someone who wants to enjoy each place, and they should stretch for young children, limited mobility, special interests or summer heat.

**Suggested nights per stop on a first trip to Egypt (EgyptMore editorial recommendation)**

| Place | Nights | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Cairo and Giza | 3–4 | The pyramids, the major museums and Historic Cairo, with room for traffic. |
| Luxor | 2–3 | West Bank tombs and East Bank temples on separate mornings, in the cooler hours. |
| Aswan | 2 | Philae, Nubian culture and a slower stretch of river, not just a transfer point. |
| Nile sailing | 3–5 | Long enough to settle into the river. Ask whether the boat, stops and guiding are private or shared. |
| Red Sea or Mediterranean coast | 3–5 | Real rest, not a one-night stop. Let season, wind and the transfer decide which coast. |
| Siwa | 3–4, plus travel days | The road is long, so the oasis needs enough time to be worth it. |

## Questions any travel provider should answer

Ask before you pay. A trustworthy answer is specific, written, and clear about what cannot be promised. These apply to us as much as to anyone.

1. Which services are private, which are shared, and who else may join?
2. What exactly is included, excluded, optional or paid locally?
3. Which hotel, room or cabin category is guaranteed, and what is only a request?
4. Who is the licensed local operator, who is the guide, and who answers the phone in an emergency?
5. What vehicle is planned, does every seat have a belt, and how are long driving days managed?
6. For boats and activities: what safety equipment is carried, and what are the weather limits?
7. What happens to my money if I cancel, if you cancel, or if a permit or schedule changes?
8. How are animal welfare, community visits, photography consent and tipping handled?
9. Which parts of the plan still depend on permits, operating schedules, weather or security approval?
