Siwa Oasis

Destination guide

Siwa Oasis

Realistic minimum
3 nights
Seasons
October to April. Desert nights are cold in winter. Summer is extremely hot and we would not plan Siwa then.
Role in a trip
A destination in itself, or an extension for a second visit. It rarely fits a first week in Egypt.

Siwa Oasis

A long overland journey to salt lakes, springs, palm groves and a mud-brick old town. Worth it for three nights or more, not as a quick add-on.

Siwa is an oasis in the Western Desert, close to the Libyan border and a full day’s drive from Cairo by way of the Mediterranean coast road and Marsa Matruh. The journey is the main planning fact: come for several nights of salt lakes, springs, palm groves and the old mud-brick town, or leave it for another trip.

At a glance

Getting there
By road. There is no scheduled passenger flight to the oasis, and you should not build a route on a flight to Marsa Matruh unless you have confirmed it operates on your dates.
Walking and heat
Moderate. Sandy tracks, uneven mud-brick paths and steps at Shali and the Mountain of the Dead, and rough driving in the dunes.
Who it suits
Travellers who like quiet, landscape and simple lodges. It does not suit a tight schedule or anyone who wants nightlife.

Why go

Siwa is unlike the Nile Valley in almost every way. Its people are Amazigh and speak Siwi as well as Arabic. The old town, Shali, was built from kershef, a mix of salt and mud, and has been slowly melting since heavy rain in 1926 drove the inhabitants out of it. At Aghurmi stands the Temple of the Oracle, where Alexander the Great came in 331 BC to consult Amun.

Around all this: date palms and olive groves, freshwater springs you can swim in, salt lakes that turn pink and silver at dusk, and the first dunes of the Great Sand Sea at the edge of the cultivation. Very little is fenced, scheduled or hurried. That is the appeal, and it is also why a rushed visit misses the point.

Where to focus

Shali and the Mountain of the Dead

Climb the ruined fortress late in the day for the view over the palms to both lakes. Gebel al-Mawta, a low hill just north of town, is cut with tombs, a few of which keep their painted decoration. Both involve uneven steps and loose ground.

Aghurmi and the Temple of the Oracle

The temple is small and partly ruined, on a rock above the old village of Aghurmi, and its interest is historical more than visual. Pair it with Cleopatra’s Spring, a stone-rimmed pool nearby where locals and visitors swim.

Salt lakes, salt pools and Fatnas

The salt pools are cut into working salt flats, so which ones can be visited changes; go with someone local. The brine holds you up like a cork and stings any cut, so rinse off afterwards. Fatnas Island, on the western lake, is where Siwa goes to watch the sunset with tea.

Dunes of the Great Sand Sea near Siwa

The Great Sand Sea

High dunes begin just south and west of the oasis. A usual afternoon takes in a drive over the dunes, a stop at Bir Wahed’s hot and cold springs, and sunset on a ridge. Ask about the route, the vehicle and the driver’s experience before you book, and say so if you would prefer less rollercoaster driving.

Practical reality

  • Government travel advice treats the Western Desert differently from the Nile Valley, and the wording changes. Read your own government’s current page for Siwa and for the roads to it before you book, because it can affect your insurance.

  • Bring cash for the whole stay. Do not rely on finding a working cash machine or a card terminal in the oasis.

    Money and payments in Egypt
  • Mobile data works in town and fades quickly in the desert.

  • Many lodges are built in the traditional way, with stairs, uneven floors and low doorways, and a few deliberately have little or no electricity. Read the room description, not just the photographs.

  • Siwa is a small, conservative community. Dress modestly in town and keep swimwear for the springs and pools where visitors swim.

    Culture and etiquette

How to plan the area

The oasis is compact. Shali and the market sit at the centre, and the Oracle temple, the Mountain of the Dead, Cleopatra’s Spring and Fatnas Island are all a short drive, tuk-tuk ride or cycle away. The salt lakes and salt pools spread east and west of town.

Anything beyond the palms is a different kind of outing. Trips into the Great Sand Sea need a 4x4, a local driver who knows the dunes and, as a rule, a permit arranged in advance through the operator. Build the stay around one desert afternoon, or a night out there, and leave the other days loose.

How long to stay

We suggest three nights at the least, which gives you two full days. With the drive each way, that is five days of your trip, and it is the honest cost of Siwa. A fourth night lets you add a night in the desert or a day with no plan at all.
