Drone Filming in Egypt: Do Not Pack Until the Plan Is Cleared

Do not bring a drone to Egypt on the assumption that you can ask at arrival. Entry, possession, flight, airspace, location and commercial-production permissions are separate questions, and every required answer should be confirmed in writing before packing.

One aerial shot can require several yeses

The aircraft entering Egypt, the operator being competent and insured, the airspace being available, the site allowing capture and the production itself being authorized are different decisions. A permit in one layer does not silently approve the rest.

Egypt’s Civil Aviation Authority publishes a drone-permit service that calls for documents including a company or client letter, application and flight-permit form, aircraft airworthiness, operator or company competence and insurance. That is evidence of a formal route—not a promise that a traveler may import or fly anywhere.

Build the minimum drone brief

• commissioning party and commercial or editorial purpose;
• exact coordinates, proposed radius, altitude and takeoff point;
• requested dates, time windows and alternatives;
• aircraft make, model, weight and identification;
• operator credentials, insurance and local operating structure;
• payload, transmission links and radio-frequency details;
• nearby airports, controlled sites, people, roads and wildlife;
• ground-camera alternative if aerial work is refused.

“Somewhere near the Pyramids at sunset” is not a permit-ready location.

Why a local operator may be better

A qualified local operator can reduce the need to import an aircraft and may understand current paperwork, airspace and site coordination. It is not automatically lawful: verify the operator, aircraft, insurance, written project approval, site permission, flight conditions, raw-footage handover and cancellation terms.

Heritage, deserts, coasts and Sinai

Visual emptiness does not mean regulatory emptiness. Archaeological sites involve conservation and site authority; deserts can involve protected areas, security or route controls; coasts can involve marine, resort and airspace constraints; Sinai contains geographically differentiated travel warnings and sensitive areas. Check the exact coordinates and current official travel advice rather than treating a whole region as open.

Batteries do not authorize the aircraft

Airline battery compliance only answers carriage. It does not authorize the drone’s entry or operation. Confirm battery watt-hours, terminal protection and carrier rules after the production permissions are feasible.

Red flags

• “Everyone flies there” without written, current project evidence;
• a stock permit image with no names, dates, aircraft or coordinates;
• an operator who will not show insurance or operating responsibility;
• takeoff from a hotel or boat assumed to authorize the airspace;
• a permit path starting after the crew arrives;
• no ground alternative in the shot list.
